Vernberg Lecture is Oct. 9; Other events are planned for fall

The Arnold School of Public Health strives to offer programs and speakers on public health topics of interest to the University community and residents throughout the state.
Here are a few of the events scheduled in the coming months:
The annual Winona B. Vernberg Distinguished Lecture Series will feature cardiologist Dr. Carl “Chip” Lavie from the University of Queensland School of Medicine as guest speaker at noon Tuesday, Oct. 9.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Russell House Theater. A reception will follow after the program.
Lavie is professor of medicine and medical director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Preventive Cardiology; director, Exercise Testing Laboratory, and staff cardiologist, Echocardiographic Laboratory at the John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute in New Orleans, Ochsner Clinical School-The University of Queensland School of Medicine. He previously served for 10 years as associate director of the Internal Medicine Training program.
A 1983 graduate of Louisiana State University Medical School where he received the Cardiology and Physiology Awards at graduation. He completed an internal medicine residency at Ochsner Medical Institutions and a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, where he joined the faculty in 1989.
A consultant in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., Lavie’s research interests include the fields of cardiac rehabilitation and prevention, including lipids, hypertension, obesity and exercise, as well as non-invasive testing, encompassing echocardiography, exercise testing, and nuclear cardiology. He is the author or co-author of more than 700 medical publications, including two cardiology textbooks and almost 40 book chapters.
He is a frequent lecturer, reviewer for several medical journals, and associate editor and cardiovascular section editor of the Mayo Clinic Proceedings and the senior editorial consultant of Congestive Heart Failure. Lavie is on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, American Journal of Cardiology, Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Prevention, Postgraduate Medicine, Emergency Medicine, the Ochsner Journal, Coronary Artery Disease, American Journal of the Medical Sciences, Current Cardiology Reviews, Cardiovascular Disorders, Journal of Geriatric Cardiology, Future Cardiology, the Journal of Glycomics and Lipidomics, the Open Atherosclerosis & Thrombosis Journal, and the Open Heart Failure Journal.
He has previously served on the editorial boards of Chest, Internal Medicine, and as the U.S. associate editor of Cardiology in the Elderly and associate editor of the American Journal of Geriatric Cardiology. For the years 2003 and 2004, Lavie served as chairman of Vascular, Hypertension and Prevention for the American College of Cardiology. He has been an elite reviewer for JACC for five of the past six years.
His scholarship efforts have earned him the Simon Dack Award as a life-time, hall of fame, reviewer.
An avid sports fan and competitive runner, Lavie has set personal records in the 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon of 18:30,38:30,1:24:30, and 3:10, respectively.
The Vernberg Lecture is named for Dr. Winona B. Vernberg, the beloved former dean of the Arnold School of Public Health. During her 18-year tenure as dean, the school grew to have more than 1,000 students, six academic departments, and 77 full-time faculty.
Other fall events planned
- 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3: “An Evening of Salsa Dancing to Benefit PASOs” will be held from 7 – 11 p.m. at the Capital Senior Center ballroom, located at 1650 Park Circle in Columbia. The fund-raising event will feature salsa lessons, dancing and live performances, “Southern-Latin Fusion Cuisine” by Scott Hall Catering and Design, beer/wine bar and a silent auction. Ramon Gil will serve as DJ, and salsa lessons and performances will be provided by Vista Ballroom.
Miss Columbia Latina will be a special guest. The funds raised from this event will assist PASOs in training community leaders to deliver prevention education and make a difference in their communities throughout South Carolina.
