Supercourse, an Internet repository of lectures on global health and prevention, is the subject of the 2009 Winona B. Vernberg Lecture at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 19 in the Gressette Room on the 3rd Floor of Harper College.

The lecturer will be Dr. Ronald E. LaPorte, a professor of epidemiology and director of Telecommunications and Disease Monitoring in the WHO Collaborating Centre at the University of Pittsburgh, who created the Supercourse.

Supercourse has a network of more than 65,000 scientists in 174 countries who are sharing, for free, a library of 3712 lectures in 31 languages. The information is available in Power Point and HTML formats. The web site receives some 75 million hits annually.

Faculty members include: nine Noble Prize winners, the U.S. surgeon general, 31 Institute of Medicine members, 39 American Epidemiological Society, 43 National Academy of Science and others.

“Ron has championed the development, sharing and electronic delivery of education in global health, and he is one of those individuals who has clearly had an impact globally in the daily health of underserved countries,” said Arnold School Dean Tom Chandler.

“Given the breadth and reach of Ron’s life work and accomplishments, I am sure this lecture will be of interest and value to all disciplines in our school,” he said.

LaPorte is a prolific writer with more than 505 publications on epidemiology, global health and the Internet. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from State University of New York at Buffalo (1971) and from the University of Pittsburgh, a masters in psychology (1974), a masters of epidemiology (1980) and doctorate in psychology (1976).
