Former Arnold School professor takes on a fight for his life against a public health enemy

August 27, 2010

Dr. John Ureda has had many roles in his life – husband, father, public health professor, and researcher, to name but a few.

Now, after a year of battling a rare type of West Nile Virus, Ureda can add another role to that list – survivor.

A former professor in the Arnold School of Public Health’s Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, Ureda is a highly regarded public health educator and researcher. That he ultimately would battle a disease with an exotic-sounding name has a bit of irony. The public health expert suddenly found himself depending on the expertise of other public health experts, as well as teams of physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals, to pull him through the crisis.

His personal story of determination to win his fight against West Nile Virus was chronicled in the Sunday, Aug. 22, edition of The State newspaper.
