Awards to recognize master's, doctoral student achievements

March 7, 2011

The Arnold School of Public Health recognizes the academic, service and leadership qualities of its students through two awards, the Jeffrey Keith Mattison Outstanding Student Achievement Award and the Doctoral Achievement Award.

Nominations are being accepted through Friday, March 18.

Both awards will be presented during the Arnold School's Hooding Ceremony on Thursday, May 5, at the Koger Center.

A student in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Jeffrey Keith Mattison died in the fall of 1987, only weeks into his graduate program of study.

To remember his life, his initiative, and his motivation for work in public health, the Student Public Health Association created the Jeffrey Keith Mattison Outstanding Student Achievement Award. Open to students in all Arnold School departments, the award recognizes the graduating master's degree student who, in a combination of service, leadership, and/or personal example, exemplifies many of Mattison's special qualities.

A student's interest and dedication to public health through service activities, as well as the personal characteristics that would contribute to having an impact in public health, are important aspects of this award.

The Arnold School of Public Health Doctoral Achievement Award is presented annually to an outstanding doctoral student. The criteria for the award include:

Demonstrated academic achievement as indicated by the nominee's grades and grade point average (to be nominated, a student must have maintained a 3.7 average);

Demonstrated professional promise in creating meaningful and relevant research and/or practical application in the field of public health;

Demonstrated potential leadership and service to the community or to the field of public health.
