Spring ushers in a series of public health events

Dr. Michael Cummings of the Medical University of South Carolina will be the featured guest speaker for the 2014 Winona B. Vernberg Distinguished Lecture Series.

 

Events that observe achievements in public health will be the focus of the spring semester at the Arnold School of Public Health.
Mark your calendars for these events:

  • March 21, Nutrition Symposium: The 2014 symposium, "Healthy Eating in Context: Communicating for Change and Sustainability," will be held from 8:30 a.m. –  4:30 p.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.  The keynote speaker will be Dr. Tom Baranowski, a professor of pediatrics at the Baylor College of Medicine and a faculty member of the Children's Nutrition Research Center. The event is sponsored by the Center for Research in Nutrition and Health Disparities and USC's Environment and Sustainability Program.   • April 7 - 13, Public Health Week: The Arnold School will hold the James E. Clyburn Health Disparities Lecture on Friday, April 11, as a signature event of Public Health Week. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Additional information will be provided soon.

Service to the community is the focus of the Dean’s Student Advisory Council of the Arnold School. Working in collaboration with Be the Match, South Carolina, DSAC will hold a bone marrow drive Wednesday, April 9, at the Public Health Research Center.
The time and location of Be the Match even will be announced, along with other events for Public Health Week.

  • April 24, Vernberg Lecture: The 2014 Winona B. Vernberg Lecture Series will present a program highlighting the 50th Anniversary of the Surgeon General's Report on Smoking.  The featured guest speaker will be Dr. Michael Cummings, one of the world’s leading authorities on tobacco policy. A faculty member at the Medical University of South Carolina, Cummings leads research on tobacco control, public policy, and smoking cessation within the Hollings Cancer Center’s Cancer Prevention and Control Program. The location and time will be announced.
  • April 25, Pine Island Picnic: The annual Pine Island Picnic celebrating spring and the end of the academic year will be held at the Pine Island Club at Lake Murray for faculty, staff and students. Ticket information will be announced.
  • May 8, Hooding Ceremony:  Vice Admiral Paul G. Gaffney II, USN (Ret.), will be the guest speaker at the Arnold School's Hooding Ceremony on Thursday, May 8. Gaffney was the seventh president of Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J., from 2003 to 2013. He has an honorary doctoral degree from USC, Jacksonville University and The Catholic University of America. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. in the Koger Center.
