Dean’s Office now at PHRC

The administrative offices of the Arnold School of Public Health have moved from the Health Sciences Building on Sumter Street to the Public Health Research Center (PHRC) at 921 Assembly St.

The move is the first phase of a plan to bring together more of the Arnold School’s faculty and staff at the PHRC and at the Discovery 1 Building on Greene Street. Renovations are under way at the Discovery 1 Building, and a move is anticipated in early 2014.

Dr. Tom Chandler, dean of the Arnold School, and Dr. Cheryl Addy, senior associate dean for academic affairs, have offices located on the fourth floor of PHRC. The Office of Undergraduate Studies is on the first level of PHRC. The second floor comprises the Offices of Graduate Studies, Development and Alumni Relations, Public Relations and Human Resources.

In the interim, the Department of Environmental Health Sciences is located in PHRC and will move to the Discovery 1 Building.

Arnold School names Delta Omega Speaker for Feb. 22 lecture

be the speaker for the
Feb. 22 Delta
Omega Lecture.

Dr. Barry Smyth of Dublin, Ireland, an internationally recognized leader in technology development, will be the featured guest speaker for the 2013 Delta Omega Lecture on Friday, Feb. 22. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at noon in the Russell House Theater.

Smyth holds the Digital Chair of Computer Science at the University College Dublin. He is the director of CLARITY: The Centre for Sensor Web Technologies, a Science Foundation Ireland-funded Centre for Science and Engineering Technologies. He is a Fellow of the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence and also a co-founder, director and chief scientist at ChangingWorlds Ltd. Smyth’s research covers a broad set of topics within artificial intelligence.

CLARITY is a research center that focuses on the intersection between two important research areas -- Adaptive Sensing and Information Discovery -- to develop innovative new technologies that contribute to improving the quality of life of people in areas such as personal health, digital media and environmental management.

Save the Date: March 29 is third annual Nutrition Research Symposium

Dr. Mariana Chilton,
a national leader in addressing child hunger in the United States, will be the guest speaker Friday, March 29, for the third annual nutrition research symposium, sponsored by the Arnold School’s Center for Research on Nutrition and Health Disparities.

The event, titled “Healthy Eating Context: Bridging Gaps, Linking Communities,” is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center and will feature a scientific poster session.

Chilton is an associate professor at Drexel University’s School of Public Health and is the director of the Center for Hunger-Free Communities.

The symposium will usher in the 2013 observance of Public Health Week, scheduled April 1 – 7.

Sixth annual James E. Clyburn Health Disparities Lecture set April 5

The Institute for Partnerships in Health Disparities has announced that the sixth annual James E. Clyburn Health Disparities Lecture will be held Friday, April 5, beginning at noon in the Russell House Theater. The lecture is part of the Arnold School’s observance of Public Health Week, April 1 – 7.

The event, which will have a scientific poster session, will include the presentation of the James E. Clyburn Health Disparities Leadership Awards, established in 2012. The awards will recognize the achievements of those individuals who have dedicated their lives to improving the health of vulnerable children and adults throughout the state and nation through research, leadership, health care and community advocacy.
