Arnold School students collected $2,172 for the American Cancer Society in the annual Relay for Life at USC.

The final tally was $672 ahead of a $1,500 goal that had been set for the April 16-15 competition held on the athletic fields of the Blatt P.E. Center. It also exceeded the $1,982.72 collected in 2009.

Morgan Dampier and Katie Carpenter were co-captains of a team of 48 volunteers who, in addition to running the relay, sold luminaries, “One Step Closer to the Cure” cards in the shape of feet that were displayed at the Russell House, refreshments during the relay, and tickets to a pancake breakfast.

Relay for Life volunteers also conducted a Coin War competition between departments within the school that raised $140.99. The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders collected $73.17 for the Coin War to win the competition. For their efforts, COMD received a trophy that the department will keep until the results of the 2011 Coin War are determined.

The school’s team gifts total was $449.96. Individual team members who raised more than $100 included: Beth Barnhill, $180; Debjani Chanda, $130; Kathy Dhotre, $115; Sarah Gareau, $165; Kate Nicholson, $175; Sidney Rohrig, $250; Jessica Schumpert, $90; Kelly Sherwood, $150; Sonia Thomas, $225.
