Volunteers can register or make donations via the Relay for Life website

March 16, 2009

The Arnold SPH Dean's Student Advisory Council (DSAC) is again seeking volunteers to raise $1,000 for the American Cancer Society as part of the April 3 Relay For Life @ USC.

Faculty, staff, students and friends are invited to help support the effort through a March 27 pancake brunch from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Public Health Research Center.

Brunch includes pancakes, sausage, and fruit juice for $5 a plate.  Tickets may be purchased from departmental DSAC representatives or the Office of Student and Alumni Services in HESC 112.

Relay for Life

Donors/volunteers can assess The Relay For Life @ USC website where they can join the SPH team or make a contribution.

Last year, Arnold students, faculty and staff raised $1,835 during the Relay drive, with proceeds coming from team memberships, a pancake brunch and sales of luminary bags and bumper stickers.

Relay For Life, the Cancer Society’s signature event, is a fun-filled, overnight experience that empowers everyone to help fight cancer by raising money and awareness.

At USC, teams of people will camp out at the Blatt PE Center’s field and take turns walking or running around a track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.

Organizers also ask everyone to wear their Arnold School of Public Health shirts to the event that will include fun activities for a “Party Under the Tent” throughout the night.

The Relay for Life website has links for visitors to join the SPH team for a $10 membership fee or to make a donation.

After accessing the site, visitors should click "Sign Up"; click "Join A Team"; enter “Arnold School” in the “Team Name" search box; click "Arnold School of Public Health", and finally click "Join Our Team."  Afterward, follow the instructions on the site.

After joining the Arnold Team, members can use the website to send emails to family and friends asking them to donate online. Visitor also can monitor the progress toward the $1,000 goal.

People can also give to the cause by clicking on the “Donate” button on the website’s home page. Donations may be earmarked for the team or to a specific team member.

All faculty, staff and students of the Arnold School are encouraged to join the team, in addition anyone, including friends and family members, can join.

DSAC representatives and the Office of Student and Alumni Services will also accept donations for the drive.

DSAC representatives will be selling Relay For Life "One Step Closer to the Cure" feet for $1 (but you may donate more). The feet will be on display on the first floor of the Arnold School of Public Health building along with a poster reflecting the progress towards the team’s goal.

In addition, DSAC members will be selling luminary bags for $10.  A luminary bag is a bag with a lit candle that is placed on the track in honor or in memory of those who have or have had cancer.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event that brings more than 3.5 million people from 4,900 communities across the country together each year.

Luminary bags may be purchased on-line, from your DSAC representative, or the Office of Student and Alumni Services (HESC 112).

If they wish, donors may obtain their bags prior to the walk so they can decorate them and return them to their DSAC representative to be placed on the track the night of the event.
