Courtney Forcucci among nation’s best divers

Diving Trials
Courtney Forcucci, a recent graduate of the Arnold School’s Department of Exercise Science, competed this week at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials, which began Sunday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
The trials, which will continue through June 24, feature more than 120 of the nation’s top divers vying for 14 spots on the U.S. Olympic Diving Team that will compete at 2012 Olympics in London.
Forcucci of Fort Mill, S.C., finished 16th among the women divers in the 3-meter springboard competition, just four spots away from the top 12 who will compete on Sunday for a spot on the Olympic team.
University of South Carolina diving coach Todd Sherritt said, “It was a very competitive meet. This being her first Olympic Trials she did a great job. She represented South Carolina well. I am very proud of her career with us. She will go down as one of the great divers I have had the privilege of coaching.”
Forcucci entered the Olympic diving competition by having had the best season of her career as a member of the USC Gamecocks diving team. She earned two All-America honors at the 2012 NCAA Championships, finishing fifth on the 3-meter springboard and 15th in the 1-meter competition. At the SEC Championships, she set the SEC and USC record to win gold on the 3-meter board; she earned bronze medal honors on the 1-meter board. Many of her accomplishments came after she suffered a leg injury in the fall of 2009 that threatened to sideline her career.
Beyond her life as a diver, Forcucci is known for her academic achievements that include a spot on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
