October events will include seniors' health forum, the 20th anniversary of the PRC and the HIV/STD conference

The second annual Senior Health Disparities Community Forum will be held Friday, Oct. 18, at the Edisto Fork United Methodist Church in Orangeburg.

The program, which will run from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., will be in the Christian Life Center of the church, located at 156 Lariot Road in Orangeburg.

Among the presentations:

  • The Affordable Care Act Update: The Health Insurance Exchange Program - What's in It for Me? The guest speaker will be Alicia Jacobs, director of special projects, for Benefits Bank of South Carolina.
  • Accessing Senior and Family Support Services Available through AARP.
  • Hospice: It's Not Just the End of Life.

Participants also will learn about benefits and services offered by the Veterans Administration and the importance of physical activity and health.

Sponsors include the Institute for Partnerships to Eliminate Health Disparities (IPEHD) at the Arnold School of Public Health, the OCAB Senior Companion Program, Edisto United Methodist Church and the UHS-Pruitt Corp.ch

Oct. 24 – PRC 20th Anniversary: The 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Arnold School's Prevention Research Center will be 5 – 6:30 p.m. in the Atrium of the Public Health Research Center, located at 921 Assembly St. The drop-in is open to Arnold School faculty, staff, students and the University community, as well as friends of the school and donors. The center was established in 1993 as one of the first Prevention Research Center Programs of the CDC. Dr. Sara Wilcox is director of the PRC, which promotes physical activity by sponsoring projects that encourage people of all ages to become more physically active.

Oct. 23 – 24, HIV/STD Conference: The 2013 S.C. HIV/STD Conference will be held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. The conference, "Honoring 30 Years of Progress: Reflections on Successes and Challenges," will feature prominent national speakers, including Dr. Harold Jaffe, who joined a CDC task force in 1981 to investigate a new disease, soon to become known as AIDS. He is the CDC's associate director of science. Other speakers are Moisés Agosto-Rosario, the director of Treatment Education, Adherence and Mobilization (TEAM) for the National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC); Jeanne White-Ginder, whose son Ryan White became the inspiration for the "The Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act"; and Hydeia Broadbent, considered a pioneer as the first African-American youth to speak up and speak out about the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Planning committee members from the Arnold School of Public Health include Dr. Lisa Wigfall and Andrea W. Williams, both from the Institute for Partnerships to Eliminate Health Disparities, and Medha Vyavaharkar of the S.C. Rural Health Research Center.
