Join the Center for Research in Nutrition and Health Disparities for their 6th Annual Symposium featuring keynote speaker Paul Cienfuegos—workshop leader, lecturer, writer, bookseller, engaged citizen. This year’s symposium is a part of the broader compilation of school-wide events that have been assembled to celebrate the Arnold School’s 40th Anniversary. Researchers and nutrition experts from the University of South Carolina and statewide organizations will gather Friday, March 18, at the USC Alumni Center for the sixth annual symposium, Healthy Eating in Context:The Realities of the Dietary Guidelines.

The 2015 Dietary Guidelines have been controversial in scientific and political circles as they play a pivotal role in informing nutrition policy in the United States. In addition to providing Americans with guidance on how to consume a healthy diet, these guidelines inform what foods can be served in school lunches and which foods are offered through various nutrition-related government assistance programs (e.g., WIC, SNAP).

The outcomes of the current debates will have important implications for improving health and preventing nutrition-related diseases in all populations, including those who are most vulnerable. This year’s symposium, held from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., will bring together new research on health disparities, social determinants, and nutrition policy that are relevant to the 2015 Dietary Guidelines.

Cienfuegos’ keynote presentation will take place during the morning of the program (see full schedule of events). A leader in the Community Rights movement, which works to dismantle corporate constitutional so-called “rights” and assert the people’s inherent right to govern themselves, Cienfuegos has been leading workshops and giving talks across the U.S. since he founded Democracy Unlimited in 1995. He also co-founded Community Rights PDX in 2012 and helped launch the Oregon Community Right Network in 2013.
