Researchers and nutrition experts from the University of South Carolina and statewide organizations will gather Friday, March 20, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center for the fifth annual symposium, Healthy Eating in Context:Building and strengthening collaborations to address hunger, poverty, and nutrition, in the Southeast.

The program, held from 8:15 a.m.-2 p.m., will address a variety of topics, including policy priorities related to SNAP healthy incentives and access to farmers markets, SNAP-Ed and summer feeding programs. Discussions will also focus on hunger, poverty and nutrition research in the Southeast.

Richard Lucas, Acting Deputy Administrator for Policy Support at the Food and Nutrition Service, will deliver the keynote address, titled Strong Research Builds Stronger Programs-the Case for Evidence. Lucas will discuss the importance of using evidence to inform nutrition assistance policymaking and operations. He will also elaborate on the kinds of work that are most relevant and valuable in supporting the mission of the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service as well as the programs that the USDA administers in collaboration with state and local partners.

In addition to a keynote speaker reception on March 19, there will be a poster session. Faculty, staff and students are invited to submit abstracts by 5 p.m. on February 16 for poster presentations in the following areas: Food Insecurity, Nutrition Policy, Nutrition Communications, Nutritional Epidemiology and Community Engagement with Vulnerable Populations.
