Second annual symposium on healthy eating will be held March 30; abstract submissions, registration under way

The second annual symposium, "Healthy Eating in Context: Local Solutions, Global Challenges," on Friday, March 30, will feature guest speaker Dr. Roni Neff of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The symposium, developed in 2011 by the University of South Carolina's Center for Research in Nutrition and Health Disparities at the Arnold School of Public Health, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

Abstracts for the symposium are being accepted through Wednesday, Feb. 29, in the following areas:

  • The role of nutrition, agricultural, and environmental policies;
  • Challenges: Barriers to a healthy and sustainable diet;
  • Solutions: Promising approaches to geopolitical, community, and household food security;
  • Food wisdom: Learning from local food movements.

Neff, an assistant scientist in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, is the research and policy director at the Center for a Livable Future at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has a joint appointment in Health Policy and Management.  The Center for a Livable Future is an academic center focused on the connections among diet, food production, environment and public health. At the Center for a Livable Future, Neff oversees policy programs, and she is developing an edited textbook on food systems and public health.

 She is a co-teacher for the course, Baltimore Food Systems: A Case Study in Urban Food Environments. Neff has worked in public health research, policy and practice for more than 20 years. She earned her doctoral degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, master's degree from the Harvard School of Public Health, and bachelor's degree from Brown University.

The Center for Research in Nutrition and Health Disparities has teamed up with the Environment and Sustainability Program at USC to host the symposium.
