Dr. Kara Montgomery of the Arnold School faculty was
chosen for induction into USC's Chi Circle of ODK.

Dr. Kara Montgomery, a clinical assistant professor in the Arnold School's Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, was one of three USC faculty recently inducted into the Chi Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa.

Membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society is regarded as one of the highest collegiate honors that can be awarded to an individual, along with Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa. Faculty members are nominated by students, staff and other faculty for consideration for membership.

Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), founded in 1915, was the first college honor society of national scope to accord recognition and honor for meritorious leadership and service in extracurricular activities and to encourage the development of campus citizenship.

"I am thrilled to have been nominated by students. It means so much to have them recognize my commitment both to USC and to my volunteer efforts with my classes at the Harvest Hope Food Bank," Montgomery said.

Twenty-eight students also were inducted into the Honor Society and recognized for their "high standard of efficiency in collegiate activities and to inspire others to strive for conspicuous attainments along similar lines."

Chi Circle, founded in 1927 at USC, is the oldest honorary leadership fraternity on campus and has conferred membership upon many distinguished men and women. Past ODK honorees include U.S. Sen. Ernest F. Hollings, U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, and football coach Joe Paterno.

"As an alumnus I am honored and humbled to join an organization which has such outstanding students and faculty at Carolina," Montgomery said. "I look forward to joining their community service, scholarship and networking activities on campus."

A faculty member since 2004, Montgomery teaches undergraduate courses in applied nutrition and introduction to health promotion, in addition to graduate courses in community health development and obesity/eating disorders. She has taught University 101 since Fall 2001. Prior to joining HPEB, Montgomery was a student services coordinator for the Arnold School's Office of Student Services.

She and her husband, Jay, have two daughters Ally and Hannah.
