United Way program features talk by Arnold School alumna; roundtable discussion will focus on health disparities research

will feature guest speaker Rozalynn
Goodwin, an Arnold School alumna.


Two programs on Dec. 8 will focus on current issues in public health – healthcare reform and health disparities research:

- Arnold School alumna Rozalynn Goodwin will be the featured guest speaker at the Wednesday Fall Community Assembly of the United Way of the Midlands.

The event will be held at the Brookland Banquet & Conference Center at 1066 Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia. The cost is $10 person and includes breakfast and registration at 7:30 a.m., with the talk scheduled for 8 – 9 a.m.

Goodwin is director of policy research and a lobbyist for the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA). Prior to joining SCHA, Goodwin worked in strategic planning and business development with Palmetto Health and in health and human services policy research in the Office of Governor Jim Hodges.

A native of Mt. Carmel, S.C., Rozalynn earned a bachelor's degree in healthcare management from Lander University and a master of health administration from the University of South Carolina's Arnodl School of Public Health.


She is the founder of The Motherhood Priority, a non-profit advocacy organization working to strengthen mother-friendly policies in the workplace, a 2004 graduate of Leadership Columbia, and board member of the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. A fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Goodwin is an elder at her church, Right Direction Christian Center, and was recognized in 2009 as a Midlands rising business leader in The State Newspaper's annual "20 under 40" feature.

Goodwin is a Family Ties columnist for TheState.com and blogger for Disruptive Women in Health Care. She and her husband Michael have two children.

- At 3 p.m., the Health Disparities Research Network will hold a roundtable discussion in the Palmetto Room of The Inn at USC, located at 1619 Pendleton St.

Dr. Mark Davis of the Arnold School's Department of Exercise Science and Dr. Tom Dompier of the College of Education will discuss their study on musculoskeletal injury that is part of the research program, Soldiers Health Promotion to Examine and Reduce Health Disparities (SHPERHD).

Dr. Shawn Youngstedt of the Department of Exercise Science will discuss mental health and sleep, another SHPERHD study.

Other research topics to be discussed by Arnold School faculty include Cancer Health Disparities, Dr. Healther Brandt; Maternal-Child Health, Dr. Kathryn Luchok; Hispanic/Latino Health Issues in South Carolina, Dr. Myriam Torres; and HIV/AIDS Prevention, Dr. Lisa Wigfall.

Research discussions by College of Social Work faculty include Obesity Disparities and Food Access, Dr. Darcy Freedman, and Kidney Transplant and Organ Donation, Dr. Teri Browne.
