January 14, 2011

Arnold School of Public Health faculty members are mentoring the research projects of four Magellan Scholars from a university-wide total of 70 beginning this semester.

The new scholars, their mentors and their research efforts are:

  • Kirby Lattwein, a senior majoring in exercise science. Dr. Raja Fayad, an assistant professor in the Department of Exercise Science, will mentor Lattwein's project, titled "The Role of Selenium in Chronic Inflammation-Induced Colon Cancer."
  • Caroline Clark, a senior S.C. Honors College student majoring in psychology. Dr. Julius Fridriksson, an associate professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, will mentor her project, titled "Measurement of Naming Ability in Aphasia Studies Utilizing fMRI."
  • Eleasa Van Slooten, a sophomore S.C. Honors College student majoring in public health. Dr. Daniela Friedman, an assistant professor in the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, and Dr. Andrea Tanner, an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, will mentor her project, titled "Are we getting the health information we need from the mass media? Consumers' Perceptions about Online Health and Medical News."
  • Angela Johnson, a senior majoring in public health. Dr. Mindi Spencer, an assistant professor in the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, will mentor her project titled, "Through Aged Eyes: Environmental Gerontology Through Photovoice."

The Magellan Scholar program was created in 2005 to enrich the academic experience of USC's undergraduates. Last fall, U.S.News & World Report's 2011 college guide singled out USC for having one of the nation's best programs for "Undergraduate Research/Creative Projects." Since the first Magellan Scholars were named in 2006, the University has awarded more than $1 million for undergraduate research.

Each Magellan Scholar receives up to $3,000 to fund a research project. Students compete for the award by submitting a research, scholarship, or creative project proposal that has been developed in collaboration with his or her faculty mentor.
