Kolby Taylor, a second year student in the Arnold School’s Department of Health Services Policy and Management, is the winner of a $5,000 scholarship from the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).

Taylor is a student member of ACHE and currently serves as the liaison between the University and the State Chapter Board. ACHE established the scholarship in 1975 in honor of Foster G. McGaw, the founder of the American Hospital Supply Corp.

A Pennsylvania native, Taylor earned a bachelor’s degree in biological science and a minor in public health, both from USC in 2008. “I’ve always wanted to practice medicine or be involved in medicine in some way,” Taylor said.

“I wasn’t sure I wanted to go right into medical school when I graduated so I decided on health administration.”

She already has ample medical credentials, working for two years as a patient care technician in the emergency room at the level one trauma center- Palmetto Health Richland Hospital.

“It was a lot of fun and a great experience. I did CPR on patients, brought trauma patients in from the helicopter, helped in the trauma room, did EKGs, drew blood – basically anything they needed,” she recalled.

She also has worked for Sandhills Pediatrics as a medical assistant/physicians assistant.

The McGaw Scholarship is a prestigious mark on Taylor’s resume. On average, only 20 scholarships are awarded annually from the nation’s 60 healthcare management graduate programs.

Her current academic projects include an administration internship at Palmetto Health Heart Hospital under the direction of the Director and a clinical trials coordinator for the Baromedical Research Foundation, a Columbia non-profit group dedicated to the development of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

In graduate school she has maintained a 4.0 GPA.

Dr. Whiejong Han, clinical associate professor and interim director of the master of health administration, recommended Taylor for the scholarship, believed to be the first to be awarded to an Arnold School student.
