A longtime faculty member and a doctoral student at the Arnold School of Public Health are recipients of research grants awarded by the USC Institute for African American Research (IAAR).

Dr. Saundra Glover, associate professor and director of the Institute of Partnerships to Eliminate Health Disparities will research a project titled, “Black Students Scope: Stress Coping & Obstruction Prevention & Education.”

Glover and Larrell Wilkinson, a doctoral candidate and director of the university’s Drug and Alcohol Program, will collaborate on the study which will examine the mental health needs of African-American students and the support structures needed at universities and colleges to meet those needs.

Debeshi Maitra, a doctoral student in the Arnold School’s Department of Health Services Policy and Management, will pursue a project titled “Examining the Influences of School Reproductive Health Services on Trajectories of STI Diagnosis among Black and White Females Making the Transition to Adulthood.”

Maitra will study the statistical disparities between racial and ethnic groups of adolescents at risk of sexually transmitted infection (STI) and whether differing types of reproductive health services provided by schools contribute to those disparities.

In February, 2009 Arnold School doctoral student Michelle Williams also received an IAAR grant to study the Shop Talk movement which trains African American barbers and stylists to talk to their clients about the importance of colon cancer screening and early detection.

IAAR was established in 2008 to support research that enhances the scholarly study and public understanding of race and black life in South Carolina, the Southeast and beyond.

The IAAR awards research grants twice annually -- $1,500 for faculty and $1,000 for graduate students.

This is the institute’s second round of research grant awards.
