From fellowships and scholarships to research, HPEB has been in the limelight

Students and faculty from the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior have been recognized recently for outstanding scholarship.

They include:

Brook Harmon, director of Columbia’s Cooking!. the popular cooking and nutrition program under the wing of the Arnold School’s Cancer Prevention and Control Program, has received a doctoral scholarship from the American Dietetic Association Foundation’s Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Leah Williams was selected to participate in the recent 2010 Institute in LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) Population Health, which was held at the Medical Campus of Boston University. Williams also was awarded an American Public Health Association Travel Scholarship to the APHA’s recent annual meeting.

Kim Butler and Leah Williams have been awarded Colonial Life fellowships for the 2010 - 2011 academic year.

Dr. Ruth Saunders has been recognized by the South Carolina Association for the Advancement of Health Education for her efforts to promote the profession, networking among members, and sharing of professional health information.

Dr. Jim Thrasher’s research to evaluate and improve pictorial warning labels for tobacco was recognized during a press conference last month. The event was held by the Minister of Health in Mexico. The Mexican Journal of Public Health also published a special issue on Tobacco Control in Latin America, for which Thrasher was the lead editor, and included an image from his social marketing campaign on the cover.
