Dean’s Office, DSAC urges faculty, students and staff to help families in need

December 2, 2008

Arnold School students, faculty and staff are working to make the holidays brighter for two struggling Midlands area families.

The Dean’s Office and the Dean's Student Advisory Council (DSAC) are adopting one family in Lexington and another in Columbia. The Lexington parents have a daughter, age 10, and a son, age 14. The Columbia parents have two sons, ages 8 and 11.

Student Services Coordinator Christy Smith said the Lexington family’s needs are serious. Lacking the most basic of necessities, they have been sleeping on the floor.

Smith said the adoption effort has located twin beds for the children but she said the parents would be grateful to anyone with a “gently-used” queen-size mattress that they would be willing to donate.

The Columbia family has been hit hard by long-term medical bills. Smith suggested they would appreciate gift cards to help with day-to-day expenses.

In an echo of last year’s adoption effort, the school will again set up a holiday gift tree in Smith's office with ornaments containing gift suggestions for particular family members.

Donors who intend to purchase a gift but are unable to make it to campus to select an ornament, are asked to email Smith with your name and the item you purchased (or plan to purchase).

That way staff can remove the ornament and save it to attach to the gift when it is delivered.

Smith asks that all presents be delivered to her office, HESC 112, by Tuesday, Dec. 16. Gifts do not need to be wrapped (but boxes or gift bags would be appreciated).

For question or more information, contact Smith at cfsmith@sc.edu or 803-777-5031 or your DSAC representative.
