Other Arnold students honored for teaching skills

Paced by the Department of Environmental Health Science, scholars from the Arnold School of Public Health captured nine awards in the university’s annual Graduate Student Day competition.

Additionally two Arnold students were presented outstanding teaching awards from the USC Educational Foundation and five students were presented Preparing Future Faculty awards from the USC Center for Teaching Excellence during ceremonies at the Russell House on Friday, April 3.

Graduate Student Day

Graduate Student Day is an annual competition for graduate students to share their research and contributions with the University community during oral and poster presentations.

Arnold School winners were: 

Environmental Health Science

  • Michelle Johnston – 1st Place Oral Presentation, Evaluation of Repetitive Extragenic Palindromic - PCR for Discrimination of Fecal Coliform Bacteria from American Alligators in South Carolina.
  • Sean McGee – 1st Place Poster Presentation, Gender specific gene expression profiles in IPF.
  • Leslyn Brusch-Richardson – 1st Place Poster Presentation, Nanotechnology Based Treatment of Multi-Drug Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • Karin Gaertner –  3rd Place Poster Presentation, A Potential Biomarker of Endocrine Disruption - Characterization and Expression of the Ecdysone Receptor (EcR) of the Marine Copepod A. tenuiremis.

Epidemiology and Biostatistics

  • Ikechukwu Ogbuanu – 2nd Place Oral Presentation, Birth order modifies the effect of IL13 gene polymorphisms on serum IgE at age 10 and skin prick test at ages 4, 10 and 18: a prospective birth cohort study.
  • Maggi Chandlee – 2nd Place Poster Presentation, Understanding the Impact of Faith Communities on Social Capital: A Qualitative Analysis.

Exercise Science

  • G. William Lyerly – 3rd Place Oral Presentation, Maximal Exercise ECG Responses and Coronary Heart Disease Mortality Among Men with Metabolic Syndrome.
  • Tatiana Warren – 2nd Place Poster Presentation, Is Waist Circumference Independently Associated with Hypertension in African American Women?
  • Angela Merlo – 3rd Place Poster Presentation, Intensive Mobility Training in Individuals with Chronic Neurological Injuries: A Case Series.

The USC Educational Foundation presented the Charles Coker Fellowship to Chistopher Kline of Exercise Science and the Cecil Scott Fellowship to Anna Mathews of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior.

The Center for Teaching Excellence presented Preparing Future Faculty Awards to Faith E. Fletcher, Lorie James, India Dorothy Rose and Michelle Williams of Health Promotion, Education and Behavior and Chinelo Ogbuanu of Health Services Policy and Management.

Twenty-two Arnold students participated in the oral and poster presentations.
