GoodBodies program seeks votes in video contest to fight childhood obesity

August 13, 2010

The Arnold School’s Goodbodies Program has taken its message of helping children learn to make healthy food and activity choices to Facebook, where a video contest is under way to help curb childhood obesity.

The winner of the contest, sponsored by We Can!® (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition) of the National Institutes of Health, will receive $1,500 to support a program to fight childhood obesity. The winning video also will be displayed on the We Can!® Web site.

“We need all of the Arnold School of Public Health’s students, faculty and staff to pull together to help the children of Columbia and vote for our video,” said Barbara Cuevas of the Department of Exercise Science. “And we hope you’ll encourage your Facebook friends to vote, too.”

GoodBodies is one of nine videos in the competition, which requires voters to have a Facebook page.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Go to this link: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/nihwecan?ref=ts. You will need to “LIKE” the We Can!® page.
  • Once you “LIKE” the page, go to “Videos.” The GoodBodies Program is video entry #9 -- USC School of Public Health.
  • Watch the video and click “LIKE.” Take time to watch the other videos and look at the “LIKE” statuses. (If you do not wish to “LIKE” the We Can!® Page, you can unlock the “LIKE” button after you have watched the videos.)

“I know the Arnold School’s students, faculty and staff can help us reach the top spot,” Cuevas said. “This would be a great accomplish for the Arnold School of Public Health and the GoodBodies Program!”

The voting continues through Aug. 20.

We Can™ or “Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition” is a national program designed for families and communities to help children maintain a healthy weight.
