Dr. Russ Pate

Dr. Russ Pate receives two awards for "Excellence in Science" from S.C. Gov. Nikki R. Haley.

"Excellence in Science" awards presented to Dr. Russ Pate

Dr. Russ Pate of the Arnold School of Public Health was among four Palmetto State scientists to receive Excellence in Scientific Research awards, presented May 1 by S.C. Gov. Nikki R. Haley.

Pate, a professor in the Arnold School's Department of Exercise Science, was named the recipient of the Excellence in Scientific Research Award and the Excellence in Scientific Awareness Award. He is the first person to receive both awards in a single year.

Dr. Tom Chandler, dean of the Arnold School, said that Pate's leadership in the mid-1990s was instrumental in revolutionizing physical activity recommendations for Americans. After organizing a meeting at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Pate worked with researchers throughout the United States to develop the recommendations that ultimately were endorsed by the CDC and the American College of Sports Medicine.

The recommendations were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 1995 and have become the benchmark for virtually all physical activity recommendations made by countries around the world, Chandler said, noting that the report is in the top 10 most cited papers in the history of JAMA.

"Dr. Pate continues to be an international leader in public health initiatives and physical activity.  He organized, and continues to lead, the National Physical Activity Plan, which was the first official U.S. government plan on physical activity," said Chandler.

Pate began his career at the University of South Carolina when he joined the faculty of USC's College of Health and Physical Education in 1974. He was a founding faculty member of the Department of Exercise Science at the Arnold School and served as a professor and department chairman from 1989 – 2000. After serving in research leadership posts for both the Arnold School and the University, Pate returned to his professor post in the exercise science department.

“I am extremely gratified to receive these awards, and I accept them on behalf of my colleagues in the Children’s Physical Activity Research Group," said Pate.  "I am privileged to work with an exceptionally talented group of people, and I am very pleased that our work has been recognized in this way.”

Beyond the University, Pate is a past president of the American College of Sports Medicine and received the ACSM's prestigious Honor Award in 2012 and Citation Award in 1996.

The S.C. Governor's Awards recognizing science research have their origin in an award, established in 1985 by the Drug Science Foundation, to honor an individual or team within the state whose achievements and contributions to science in South Carolina merited special recognition. The goal also was to promote wider awareness of the quality and extent of scientific activity in the Palmetto State.

Since 1989, the "Governor’s Award for Excellence in Science," has been under the joint sponsorship of the governor’s office and the S.C. Academy of Science.  In 1993 these groups were joined by the Dewees Development Corporation and Harbor Watch of Charleston. The Governor's Awards for Scientific Excellence is sponsored by MeadWestvaco, Specialty Chemicals Division and the S.C. Research Authority (SCRA). Four awards have been annually since 2009.

Other award recipients include Dr. Apparao Rao and Dr. John Ballato, both of Clemson University, who received the Excellence in Scientific Research Award. Dr. Brian Powell, also of Clemson, was the recipient of the Young Researcher Award for Excellence in Scientific Research.

Dr. Kara Montgomery named "Outstanding Faculty Partner"

Dr. Kara Montgomery has earned the Outstanding Faculty Partner award from USC's Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support. The presentation was made at an awards breakfast on May 2.

Montgomery is a clinical assistant professor and faculty adviser at the Arnold School's Office of Undergraduate Student Affairs.

The award recognizes a member of the USC faculty who has demonstrated significant support for the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support, as well as the division's programs/services and the overall quality of campus life.

Dr. Joe Jones selected for "Gardner Inspirational Faculty Award"

Dr. Joe Jones of the Arnold School's Department of Environmental Health Sciences is the recipient of the 2013 - 2014 John N. Gardner Inspirational Faculty Award.

The award is given in honor of John N. Gardner, a USC Distinguished Professor Emeritus, who was director of University 101 for 25 years and is the founder of the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition.

Jones recently was named the new principal of USC's Green (West) Quad, where he leads sustainability efforts for the residence hall’s 500 students. He was recognized as the award recipient at the Faculty Awards Ceremony on April 30 and the University Housing Awards Breakfast on May 6.

Now in retirement from USC, Gardner serves as Senior Fellow of the Center where he works with the center's publications and conferences and other campus-wide projects. This award is in recognition of his many efforts during his career to enhance USC's living and learning communities. Established in 1999, the award is presented each academic year by University Housing and University 101 Programs to a faculty member who clearly demonstrates a devotion to the education of students living on-campus by encouraging them to select and participate in meaningful experiences within and beyond the classroom, including community engagement, research, study abroad, leadership programs and internships.

Jones is in good company. In 2013, Dr. Casey Goldston Giraudy of the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior also was selected for Gardner Inspirational Faculty Award.
