Second round of
balance and mobility study
scheduled for January 2008
University
of South Carolina researchers are seeking adults 65 and older for the
second round of a study on improving balance and mobility.
The next round will start in January 2008 and will run again for five
weeks. The study requires dividing all participants randomly into two
groups. One group starts exercising in January, the other group starts
exercising later.
Researchers will use the Feldenkrais Method, a slow-paced, gentle
exercise method designed to promote efficient movements.
Participants must be able to walk 30 feet without assistance and
complete easy balance and mobility tasks during pre- and post-evaluation
sessions. Participants also will be asked to complete short
questionnaires.
The study includes classes from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays
and Fridays. All classes take place in Room 305 of the Public Health
Research Center, 921 Assembly Street. Ample parking is available.
Parking permits will be provided.
Persons who desire to attend classes with a friend or spouse will be
assigned to the same group. After completing all parts of the study,
participants will receive $12 gift certificates for local stores or
restaurants.
