Arnold School department chair Dr. Larry Durstine is returning to China to lecture on sports medicine during a two-week visit to the People’s Republic of China.

Durstine will lecture in Guangzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai and Beijing during his Nov. 8-22 visit. The head of the Arnold School’s Department of Exercise Science, last spoke in China in 2006 when he appeared in his capacity as president of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

The initial invitation for the visit was extended by the China Sports Science Society (CSSS) which hosted his previous visit.

“I am definitely very honored and pleased to be invited,” said Durstine, who will lecture on “exercise as medicine” and “exercise management for persons with chronic diseases and disabilities.”

Coincidentally the second subject is also the title of a recently-updated textbook that Durstine wrote in collaboration with a team of his exercise science peers.

Interest in exercise science in China was stimulated by last year’s Olympics held in Beijing. China also faces a host of public health challenges including: dense air pollution, the highest tobacco consumption in the world, unhealthy diet and lifestyle changes and an aging population.
