Arnold School department chair Dr. Larry Durstine’s name is in print again, this time on the third edition of a textbook he wrote in collaboration with a team of his exercise science peers.

ACSM’s Exercise Management for Persons with Chronic Diseases and Disabilities offers both exercise and health professionals the latest research and applications for integrating exercise into the treatment of 49 chronic diseases and disabilities.

Durstine, head of the Arnold School’s Department of Exercise Science, is one of four co-authors of the 456-page work just released by the American College of Sports Medicine.

Others include Dr. Geoffrey Moore of Cayuga Center for Healthy Living, Ithaca University; Dr. Patricia Painter of the University of Minnesota and Dr. Scott Roberts of California State University, Chico.

In notes accompanying its release, the ASCM said it “provides an overview of exercise management and addresses a wider spectrum of chronic diseases and disabilities with a consistent and concise format allowing readers quick access to the pathology of interest, exercise responses and adaptations, management of medications, and recommendations and special considerations of exercise testing and programming.”

“Within the text, diseases and disorders are organized into six sections: cardiovascular; pulmonary; metabolic; immunological and hematological, orthopedic; neuromuscular; and cognitive, psychological, and sensory. Information presented for each of the 49 conditions is based on the most current clinical research.”

The third edition includes added color and contains new chapters on, stress and neuropsychiatric disorders, multiple chronic conditions, and fibromyalgia. Information on professional preparation in serving patients with chronic diseases or disabilities has also been added. In addition, reformatted tables provide quicker reference for testing and prescription data. Recommended readings found at the end of the book offer resources for more in-depth study.

Durstine said, “Geoff, Trish, Scott and I developed the 3rd edition of ACSM’s Exercise Management for Persons with Chronic Diseases and Disabilities to assist exercise professionals in managing exercise testing and training programs for persons with chronic diseases and disabilities. This text book is intended to provide recommendations with respect to what to do for a person having a chronic disease or disability when considering “real-life” situations and exercise programming.

The first edition of this book was printed in 1997.
