Arnold School alumni Michael G. Dickey has been named assistant chief executive officer of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE).

Dickey brings 14 years of experience working for public and private organizations in program development and management, training and education and public health systems and services research at the national, state and local levels.

At SOPHE, Dickey will provide senior oversight to the organization’s cooperative agreement with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Healthy Communities Program, designed to catalyze policy and environmental changes that support healthy lifestyles.

He also will help expand SOPHE’s training portfolio, administer internal operations, and serve as an ambassador to several external organizations.

SOPHE, founded in 1950, is an independent, international professional association made up of a diverse membership of health education professionals and students. The society promotes healthy behaviors, healthy communities, and healthy environments through its membership, its network of local chapters, and its numerous partnerships with other organizations.

An Illinois native, Dickey earned a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University in 1994. In 1999, he became a student in the Arnold School’s Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, earning a master’s degree in 2000.

During his studies at USC, Dickey gained experience as a graduate assistant focusing on HIV/AIDS, developing and presenting educational materials on the disease to health care professionals throughout the state.

After graduation from USC, he served as director of Public Health Services for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and as director of the National Native American Provider Training Initiative.

"Michael brings a broad-range of knowledge and skills that will help advance the Society’s mission and the health education profession," said M. Elaine Auld, SOPHE chief executive officer. "We are delighted to welcome him to the SOPHE team."

Along with his position at SOPHE, Mr. Dickey serves on the Education Board and Joint Policy Committee for the American Public Health Association and is the chair of the CDC Review Board for the National Native American AIDS Prevention Center.
