Dr. David Simmons, who has a joint appointment in Anthropology and Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, received a Michael J. Mungo Undergraduate Teaching Award during the ceremonies.

In recognizing Davis’s work, the selection committee noted he has been a faculty member for 26 years.

“During this time, his research on the neurobiological mechanisms of mental and physical fatigue, on nutritional countermeasures for mental and physical fatigue, and the effects of nutrition and exercise on immune function and disease resistance has gained national and international recognition,” said Dr. Jeanette M. Jerrell, a USC School of Medicine faculty member who chaired the selection committee.

“His current, ‘cutting-edge’ research focuses on the efficacy and safety of herbal extract/phytochemicals on fatigue and immune suppression during mental and physical stress and disease.

“His distinguished academic work has been especially useful to the Department of Defense in advancing their research projects to improve combat troop health, performance, and recovery from injury and fatigue," Jerrell said.

In winning this year’s award, Davis joins five other Arnold School faculty who were past recipients of the honor: Beth Mayer-Davis, Alan Decho, C. Marjorie Aelion, G. Thomas Chandler and Russell Pate.

The Education Foundation Award consists of a $3,000 prize and a certificate of recognition.
