Columbia's Cooking! Head to the kitchen!

Columbia's Cooking! is heating up again in 2011 with a spicy first class and interesting food ideas for you and your family.

  • January 19: 6 – 7:30 p.m., Indian Spice Demonstration Class: Devi Raju leads this class on Indian Spices. The program, to be held in the Columbia's Cooking! kitchen at 915 Greene St., will include the demonstration of a recipe for Besibelabath (spicy lentils and rice) and a talk on the use and importance of spices in the Ayurvedic diet.   • January 24: 6 – 7 p.m., Healthy Food for the Soul Demonstration Class: Phyllis Allen, Registered, Licensed Dietitian and nutrition columnist for IMARA Magazine, will lead this class and give tips on how to modernize traditional soul and Southern recipes. The recipe will be announced. The cost is $20 per person.   • January 28: 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., Sardine Demonstration Class: 
Katherine Shavo, Registered, Licensed Dietitian, will teach this class from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. in the Columbia's Cooking! kitchen at 915 Greene St. Sardines – the Rodney Dangerfield of the culinary world because they don't get any respect – will star in this class. Participants will prepare a classic sardine dish and learn more about the health benefits of this disrespected, yet tasty, fish.
  • February 4: 6 – 8 p.m., Kids in the Kitchen: Presented by the Richland County Recreation Commission, this class will help your children develop heart healthy habits. The fun-filled program, which will be in Room 101 of the Discovery Building at 915 Greene St., will provide tips on making healthy afterschool snacks. Participants also will have the chance to take part in fun activities, including zumba and a bicycle obstacle course, to get the heart pumping. The cost is $10 per person.
