Dr. Heather Brandt, an associate professor in the Arnold School's Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, is a recipient of the 2014 TWIN Award, given by the Palmetto Center for Women.

The TWIN Award – Tribute to Women in Industry -- honors women whose outstanding achievements mark them as leaders and role models in business and in the community. Since the inception of the award in 1980, more than 500 women have been honored for their contributions to business, education, health, the arts and the community.

Thirty-five honorees from across the Midlands were recognized at the 34th annual awards event, which featured keynote speaker Beth Dinndorf, president of Columbia College.

Brandt's career at the Arnold School began in 2001 as a graduate research assistant in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. As she continued to excel in academia, Brandt was named to the core faculty of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program and is a faculty affiliate with USC's Women's & Gender Studies Program.

This is the second prestigious award for Brandt in recent months. She was selected for the Early Career Award by the Public Health Education and Health Promotion Section of the American Public Health Association in November.

Her research areas of interest include cancer prevention and control; cancer disparities; and social and behavioral aspects of human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer. Her research also is focused on community-based participatory research strategies; the influence of health literacy on health, behavior, and research participation; and women's health.

First organized in 1914 as the YWCA of the Midlands, the new Palmetto Center for Women remains committed to providing a home and meeting place for the development of women. The organization has expanded its original mission to address women's economic, financial, entrepreneurial and educational needs.

In addition to individual honorees, PCW presented two organizations with the Palmetto Center for Women Award. The award is the highest honor that PCW awards annually. It is awarded to a business and non-profit entity in the Midlands.

The 2014 Non-Profit PCW Award was presented to the Junior League of Columbia Inc., which is committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

SCE&G was the recipient of the 2014 Corporate PCW Award. Through its charitable giving efforts and employee volunteerism, SCE&G supports a number of non-profits and events designed to improve the education, health and well-being of women throughout South Carolina.
