The first annual Sataloff Award is named in honor of Dr. Robert Sataloff, chairman of the board of the Voice Foundation, the world's oldest and leading organization dedicated to voice medicine, science, and education.

The award recognizes outstanding research from young researchers no more than five years from the completion of their training. The award is based on the investigator’s abstracts submitted to the annual symposium and curriculum vita. The winner receives free registration for the Voice Foundation’s annual symposium, and travel and hotel costs from Elsevier.

Bonilha is director of the Voice Disorders lab, and founder and director of The Voice Clinic, part of the USC Speech and Hearing Research Center. She received her doctorate in 2005 from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. She completed her post-doctoral year at USC and has since worked in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders under the Centenary Plan with NIH NIDCD funding.

A certified speech-language pathologist Bonilha earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Central Florida in Orlando before coming to USC in 2002. Bonilha’s teaching, research, and clinical activities are devoted to voice disorders.

While a doctoral student, she received the New Investigator Research Award from the Voice Foundation. In November 2008, she earned the Early Career Contributions in Research Award presented by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. Bonilha has also recently won a “Lessons for Success” award from an ASHA/NIH joint initiative.

The “Lessons for Success” program awards young investigators who have received NIH funding a travel and conference grant for mentorship on grant writing, grant funding, and career planning. Bonilha is one of approximately 30 who earned this prestigious award.

This year’s Voice Foundation Symposium will be June 3-7 in Philadelphia.
