Arnold School seeks awards for outstanding alumni

Nominations are being accepted for the Norman J. Arnold Alumni Medal and the

Gerry Sue Arnold Alumni Award to be presented at the Arnold School of Public Health's 2011 annual Hooding Ceremony May 5.

The Norman J. Arnold Alumni Medal is open to all alumni who graduated in 2000 or earlier. Eligible alumni should demonstrate work that has had both a positive impact on the profession and on the health of an identified community or population and has brought recognition to the Arnold School of Public Health.

The Gerry Sue Arnold Alumni Award is open to all alumni who graduated in 2001 or later. Alumni whose work has both made a difference to the profession and in the health of an identified community or population are eligible for this award.

Nominations can be made by faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the Arnold School. The deadline for nominations 5 p.m. Friday, March 4. Late submissions will not be considered.

Nominees will be contacted by the Selection Committee and asked to submit a current CV or resume and a letter accepting the nomination. Award winners will be selected in early April.

The Arnolds are dedicated and generous advocates for a healthier South Carolina. In 2000, the School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina was named for Norman J. Arnold in recognition of the couple's generous endowment. Through the Arnold's support, the school is better able to serve its students and the citizens of the state in promoting good health for people everywhere. For more than two decades, the Arnolds have donated their time and significant resources to public and volunteer agencies. They continue to support the Arnold School by recognizing the school's outstanding alumni through the establishment of the annual alumni awards.

The 2010 Norman J. Arnold Medal went to Dr. Stewart G. Trost, an associate professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences at Oregon State University. Trost earned his doctorate from the Arnold School in 1998.

Dr. Keith J. Zullig, an associate professor in the Department of Community Medicine at the West Virginia University School of Medicine was the recipient of the 2010 Gerry Sue Arnold Award. Zullig earned his doctorate from the Arnold School in 2000.
