Check out the Arnold School presentations at APHA and plan to stop by booth at expo

More than two dozen Arnold School faculty and staff are on the presentations agenda for the American Public Health Association’s 138th annual meeting and exposition Nov. 6-10 in Denver.

The meeting will bring together more than 12,000 public health professionals to share research and ideas, and stands as the largest such gathering in the world. The 2010 gathering will feature more than 1,000 scientific sessions and 700 exhibits.

The Arnold School also will have a booth at the Colorado Convention Center. The Public Health Expo is the largest and most comprehensive public health exhibit. It will feature more than 700 booths of information, state-of-the-art products, and services geared toward public health professionals. The Arnold School booth number is 2033.

The Public Health Expo hours are: Sunday, Nov. 7: 2 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.; Monday, Nov. 8: 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Nov. 9: 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, Nov. 10: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Betsy Barton, a study on the growing burden of congestive heart failure on our health care system, especially with the progressive aging of the U.S. population. Session 2025.

Dr. Jessica D. Bellinger moderates a poster session on factors contributing to disparities in women’s health and practical public health approaches to reduce such disparities. Session 2042.

Dr. Chaokai Chang, a study of the response of ophthalmologists in Taiwan to government mandated phased global budgeting. Session 5055.

Dr. Jason D. Coleman discusses lessons learned from Project FAITH, an HIV prevention and stigma reduction intervention for African American faith-based organizations in South Carolina. Session 4258.

Dr. M. Elizabeth Fore, a study of the impact of budget cuts on a Medicaid-funded Home and Community-Based Demonstration Program in South Carolina. Session 5102.

Alexa Gallagher, a study reveals weight gains of 1-10 pounds are not harmful to pregnant obese women. Session 3132. (Gallagher’s paper was selected as a finalist by the MCH section at APHA during the Greg Alexander Outstanding Student Paper Session: Maternal and Child Health Research and Implications.)

Jennifer Gander, a study reveals fit men who have good or excellent self- rated health (SRH) and cardiorespiratory fitness have the lowest risk of mortality compared to unfit men with poor or fair SRH. Session 3256.

Dr. Gregory A. Hand, a study suggests that physical activity can significantly affect important risk factors for cardiovascular disease in persons living with HIV/AIDS. Session 5163.

Jason R. Jaggers, a study identifies the associations between psychological and physiological stress on HIV-related symptoms and symptom distress. Session 4195.

India Rose, a study reveals that despite passage of health care reform, a major disparity still exists between African American and Caucasian students as it relates to health insurance coverage. Session 3070.

Dr. Edith Williams discusses the Buffalo Lupus Project, a community-based participatory research partnership formed to explore the relationship between a local waste site and high rates of lupus in a largely African-American area of Buffalo, N.Y. Session 3110.

Leah Renee Williams, a study to address critical gaps in the scientific knowledge on the effectiveness of community-university partnerships in empowering vulnerable communities in North Carolina. Session 5055.

Dr. Sacoby Wilson discusses the partnership between Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Environmental Defense Fund and details the impact of the Alpha Goes Green Initiative on raising environmental awareness of disadvantaged communities. Session 4090.

Alexa Gallagher’s paper was selected the finalist by MCH section at APHA this year (might be the first award). She will present her work at 3132.0 Greg Alexander Outstanding Student Paper Session: Maternal and Child Health Research and Implications. Her session convenes on Monday, November 8 at 10:30 and her talk will start at 11:30am. The title of her talk is “Weight gain during pregnancy in obese women: Should they gain even less?” Here is the weblink for more information.
