APHA meeting focuses on 'Healthy Communities'

The 134th annual meeting and exposition of the American Public Health Association will be held Saturday, Oct. 29, through Wednesday, Nov. 2, in Washington D.C.

The event is the oldest and largest gathering of public health professionals in the world. More than 13,000 national and international physicians, nurses, administrators, educators, researchers, epidemiologists, and related health specialists are expected to attend.

This year's theme is "Healthy Communities Promote Healthy Minds and Bodies."

Award to Dr. Cheryl Addy

Dr. Cheryl Addy, the Arnold School's senior associate dean for academic affairs, will receive an award from the Statistics Section at APHA. The 2011 Statistics Section Academic Award will be presented during the 2:30 meeting Tuesday, Nov. 1, of the Lowell Reed Lecture and the Spiegelman and Statistics Section Awards presentations (session 4340.0). The meeting is at the Hyatt.

Dr. Dennis Gillings will give the Lowell Reed Lecture. Section awards will be given to Dr. Addy for achievement in academia, and Dr. Donna Hoyert for achievement in government. Dr. Sudipto Banerjee will receive the Spiegelman Award.

Arnold School Drop-In

The Arnold School of Public Health drop-in for the APHA meeting will be at the Brickfield Center of the AARP building from 5:30 - 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31.

AARP donated their conference center for the reception that will be held in Building A of the AARP complex, located at 601 E Street NW in Washington, D.C.

The Arnold School of Public Health and AARP have been partners in the annual John Luehrs Annual Fellowship Award. Luehrs, who died in 2006, was national coordinator for health and long-term care issues in the AARP's Department of State Affairs. He was much beloved by his friends and colleagues at AARP, and they established the fellowship in his memory in 2007.

For the AARP security desk, the Arnold School has been asked to provide them names of people who are attending, though guests without an RSVP will not be turned away.

Visit the Arnold School at APHA Expo

The Arnold School's booth at the APHA Annual Meeting & Public Health Expo is Number 7120.

The expo will be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Exhibit dates are Sunday, Oct. 30, through Wednesday, Nov. 2. The expo will feature more than 700 booths of information, state-of-the-art products, and services geared toward public health professionals.

Public Health Expo Hours are: 2 – 5:30 p.m. Sunday; 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday; 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Tuesday; and 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The convention center is located at 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW.
