4 from USC named to prestigious SEC program

Dr. Sara Wilcox has been named an SEC Academic Leadership Development
Program fellow.
Dr. Sara Wilcox, director of the Prevention Research Center at the Arnold School of Public Health, is one of only 48 faculty and administrators from Southeastern Conference universities to be named a 2014 -15 SEC Academic Leadership Development Program fellow.
A professor in the Department of Exercise Science, Wilcox joins three other University of South Carolina faculty to be named to the leadership program. The other faculty are Christy Friend, director, Center for Teaching Excellence; Augie Grant, the J. Rion McKissick Professor of Journalism, and Robert Ployhart, the Bank of America Professor of Business Administration.
The SEC Academic Leadership Development Program (SEC ALDP) is a professional development program that seeks to identify, prepare and advance academic leaders for roles within SEC institutions and beyond. It has two components: a university-level development program designed by each institution for its own participants and two SEC-wide workshops held on specified campuses for all program participants.
The workshops will be Oct. 13 - 15 at the University of Missouri in Columbia and Feb. 18 - 20 at Texas A&M University in College Station.
The SEC ALDP is managed locally by a liaison who has been designated by each university’s provost to serve as the primary point of contact on campus. Liaisons assist the fellows through the year-long SEC ALDP and organize university development opportunities.
"The SEC ALDP, through formal workshops and on-campus activities, aims to provide future academic leaders the opportunity to learn and develop the skills needed to meet the challenges of academic leadership," said Dr. Peter Ryan, the SEC ALDP liaison at Mississippi State University and chair of the SEC ALDP.
Since its inception in 2008, SEC ALDP has graduated more than 230 faculty and academic administrators. Program alumni have become deans and provosts at universities around the SEC and throughout the United States, including Dr. Laurence Alexander, formerly of the University of Florida. Alexander, who was in the 2012 - 13 program, is now the chancellor at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The SEC ALDP is part of SECU, the academic initiative of the SEC. SECU serves as the primary mechanism through which the collaborative academic endeavors and achievements of SEC universities are promoted and advanced.
