$40,000 award will expand PASOs’ leadership program

July 28, 2014

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina has awarded PASOs a $40,000 grant through its Immigrant Families Initiative.

“The Foundation is pleased to announce this Initiative in response to the growing need of immigrant families across the state of South Carolina,” said Tom Keith, the foundation’s president.

The Sisters of Charity Foundation established the Immigrant Families Initiative this year to enhance individual and family well-being.

The award will enable PASOs to expand its leadership program, which empowers grassroots Latino leaders to educate their peers and build capacity of health and social service providers to respond to the maternal/child health and early education needs of the Latino population. PASOs will be able to increase the number of Latino grassroots leaders in Charleston, Saluda and Newberry counties.

“PASOs helps the Latino community and service providers work together for strong and healthy families,” said Julie Smithwick, executive director of PASOs, which is hosted at the Arnold School of Public Health. “This award will enable PASOs to better meet the complex challenges of serving the Hispanic community.”

South Carolina ranks second in the nation in immigrant growth. Immigrants represent nearly 5 percent of South Carolina’s total population, with the majority coming from Latin America, followed by Asia and Europe.

Other grants from the initiative were awarded to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia; the Charleston County School District; the S.C. Appleseed Legal Justice Center; Student Action with Farmworkers, and the USC College of Social Work.
