We presume that Dr. Jim Hussey, left, and Dean Chandler have remained friends through the challenge!

It was only a matter of time before someone at the University of South Carolina decided that the time had come for school leaders to participate in the social media sensation, “Ice Bucket Challenge,™” to  benefit the ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) Association.

Dr. Tom Chandler, dean of the Arnold School of Public Health, accepted the challenge from Dr. Tony Ambler, dean of the College of Engineering and Computing, and Dr. Anna Scheyett, dean of the College of Social Work.

The three deans met at “high noon” Monday (Aug. 25) on USC’s historic Horseshoe to participate in the challenge, which involves people getting doused with buckets of ice water on video, posting that video to social media, then nominating others to do the same, all in an effort to raise ALS awareness.  People can either accept the challenge or make a donation to an ALS Charity of their choice, or do both.

Dr. Jim Hussey, chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, had the honor of dousing the Arnold School dean with ice and cold water.

The fund-raising program became a national phenomenon by Pete Frates of Beverly, Mass., and his family who made the “Ice Bucket Challenge” go viral on the social media sites Facebook and Twitter. Frates, 29, has lived with ALS , also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, since 2012 and has worked with the ALS Association’s Massachusetts Chapter. He was a former baseball player with Boston College and served as the team’s captain.

On Monday, as USC’s deans participated in the challenge, the ALS Association reported donations approaching $80 million from the “Ice Bucket Challenge.”

Chandler now has challenged “all Arnold SPH department chairs and center directors to give to the ALS Association for research in this neurodegenerative disease, or get dumped on by me when you least expect it.”

Those who wish to donate to the challenge can visit http://www.alsa.org/fight-als/ice-bucket-challenge.html and click on the “donate” button.
