Dr. Jamie Lead

Dr. Jamie Lead of the Arnold School is chair for the 9th annual ICEENN.

Registration and abstract submission are under way for the 9th International Conference on the Environmental Effects of Nanoparticles and Nanomaterials (ICEENN) to be held Sept. 7 – 11 in Columbia at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

Dr. Jamie Lead of the Arnold School of Public Health is the ICEENN chair. Lead is the chair of the Environmental Nanoscience and Risk Assessment Center of Economic Excellence at USC. The center, a collaboration between USC’s Arnold School of Public Health and the College of Arts and Sciences' NanoCenter, is part of the SmartState™ Program for South Carolina's research universities.

The abstract submission is June 15; the registration deadline is June 30.

The ICEENN will bring together researchers, regulators and industry to discuss the potential hazards and risks of current and future applications in the key sector of nanotechnology, along with mechanisms to bring about risk reduction while maintaining the economic and social benefits of the sector.

Among the research areas to be highlighted are physical and chemical properties of nanoparticles as related to the environment and health; aging and effects on fate and behavior; toxicology and ecotoxicology; social and regulatory sciences; innovation and applications of nanotechnology to environmental and health issues.

Speakers will include Sally Tinkle, IDA/Science and Technology Policy Institute in Washington, D.C.;  Vicki Grassian, University of Iowa; Kevin Wilkinson, University of Montreal; Kenneth Dawson, Centre for BioNano Interactions (CBNI);  Robert Tanguay, Oregon State University; William Boyes, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.; David Berube, N.C. State University; and Wunmi Sadik, SUNY-Binghamton.
