HPEB global public health influence growing

The Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior continues to expand its influence in global public health efforts.
Among recent activities:

  • Doctoral student Caroline D. Bergeron has been selected by the World Health Organization to serve in its Aging, Disability and Long-Term Care Division in Copenhagen, Denmark.  She will be in Europe through October.
  • Frances Ashe-Goins, who earned her master’s degree from the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, was invited by the State Department to participate in a delegation to Beijing, China, to discuss women’s health and domestic violence. Ashe-Goins is the deputy director of the Office of Women’s Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
  • HPEB researchers L.L. Huang, James Thrasher, Katrina Walsemann and Daniela Friedman are authors on a paper, titled “Impact of the ‘Giving Cigarettes is Giving Harm’ campaign on knowledge and attitudes of Chinese smokers,” and published in the journal Tobacco Control.

Because limited published evidence has existed on the efficacy of tobacco control mass media campaigns in China, this study looked at the impact of a mass media campaign “Giving Cigarettes is Giving Harm” (GCGH) on Chinese smokers’ knowledge of smoking-related harms and attitudes toward cigarette gifts.

The researchers used population-based, representative data of 3,709 adult smokers who participated in the International Tobacco Control (ITC) China Survey conducted in six Chinese cities before and after the campaign.

The study, which concluded that the GCGH campaign increased knowledge of smoking harms, provides evidence to support future campaign development to effectively fight the tobacco epidemic in China.

Tobacco Control is an international peer-reviewed journal for health professionals and others in tobacco control.
