Leila Heidari and Emily Learner, undergraduate students at the Arnold School of Public Health, are among six young women to be named finalists in the 2014 USC Outstanding Woman of the Year program.

The finalists will be recognized at the annual Outstanding Women at USC Celebration on Wednesday, March 26, at 4 p.m. in the Gressette Room of Harper College on the historic Horseshoe.  The announcement of USC's Outstanding Woman will be made at the event,  sponsored by the Department of Student Life within the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support.

Heidari, a senior health major, and Learner, a senior exercise science major, are from Columbia.

Heidari is pursuing the Baccalaureus Artium et Scientiae degree in Environmental Health. Her focus areas of study are biology, psychology, environmental studies and public health.

Within the Department of Exercise Science, Learner is pursuing the motor development tract and also will have a minor in psychology.

Other finalists are Kathryn Kingsmore,, a senior biomedical engineering major from Charlotte; Alli Finkelston, a junior public relations major from Dresher, Penn.; Catherine Davenport, a junior English major from Columbia; and Priyanka Juneja, a senior GSCOM, finance, and international major from Irmo.

The Arnold School of Public Health has been well-represented in the USC Outstanding Woman of the Year program. Jessica Steele, a senior Carolina scholar from Hilton Head Island, was named USC's University of South Carolina’s Outstanding Woman of the Year for 2010. Steele majored in English, health and international studies. Last year, Hayley Elia of Columbia, an Arnold School senior with a commitment to humanitarian efforts, was named USC's Outstanding Woman. Elia was a public health major and a South Carolina Honors College student.

USC students, faculty and staff nominated 95 women for the 2014 award. From these nominees,  54 applications were screened by a five-member review committee whose members selected the six finalists. The finalists then participated in an interview to determine the recipient.

To be eligible for the award, the candidate must be an undergraduate student with 60 credit hours or more; attended USC for at least one semester; and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.  Other areas of consideration for this award include academic and award achievements, campus involvement, community involvement and service, athletic activities, performing arts, campus media, work experience or internships and contributions and impact to the University and to other women.
