Graduate students take top honors in USC awards program

Even Cocky, USC's popular mascot, moves into action to report the news on winners from the 17th annual USC Graduate Student Day competition.

Arnold School of Public Health scholars were in the winner's circle at USC's Graduate Student Day.

The 17th annual event drew 150 students from 59 graduate programs. Participants competed in the categories of oral research presentation, poster research presentation, creative presentation and 3-minute thesis/dissertation (EMT) speeches.

Ann Blair Kennedy of the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior was the recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Leadership.
The Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award was presented to Emily Garnett of the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders.
Among the other award recipients:

  • George M. Reeves Graduate Fellowship: Gina Besenyi, Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior.
  • Mortar Board Fellowship for Graduate and Professional Studies: Jennifer Newman, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
  • Oral Research Presentations:  Danielle Gentile, Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior; Suvarthi Das, Department of Environmental Health Sciences, and Kembell Hetzler, Department of Exercise Science.
  • Poster Presentations:  Manza Agovi, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, received the overall poster award. Emily Garnett of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders also received recognition for her poster presentation.
  • 3MT PresentationsKatie Becofsky of the Department of Exercise Science earned second place in the competition. Third place honors were awarded to Otis Owens of the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior.
